Ms. ClipperJCM and I are (hurricane-permitting) planning on spending three days at the Fairmout Mayakoba, south of Cancun, in early September. As much as I would like to avoid renting a car in Mexico, everything I have been reading indicates that I have little other choice but to rent a car--especially since we'd ideally like to spend a day or two exploring Mayan ruins.

Does anyone have any insight into how we might get by without a car, if that's possible? The Fairmont is about 40 miles south of CUN, near Playa del Carmen, if that helps.
