Is gay an issue in Falwell country?

My partner and I are planning a driving trip from Philadelphia down to Richmond VA next year over about two weeks. It's to fulfil a long hold ambition to visit some of the Civil War sites. After Richmond we head to Savannah, Charleston and Atlanta to finish off.

We've just watched a TV documentary tonight on the religious right in the US and its influence. The documentary concentrated on VA. The thought has occurred, I hope unnecessarily, whether there is going to be an issue of two gentlemen sharing a room in some of the small places we may visit which could include Gettysburg, Frederick, Lexington, Lynchburg and Richmond. I know that this is Falwell country but until now the thought had not crossed our minds.

I've travelled extensively around the world and in the States, but overwhelming on the east and west coasts, without the hint of a problem. Should we be concerned? Will hotels say we can't share a bed? Like it's not going to be that we are sitting holding hands and looking in each others eyes. We are boringly average!
