Rather embarrassingly, she did rather better than me and US Airways are offering her (and me) a $300 Travel with US certificate each - so, a total of $600.
That, coupled with my previous $250 from my own letter makes a total of $850.
Better?
Much better! It's hard to put a cap on what kind/form of compensation you should get. Because as an outsider the certificates totalling $850 sounds fine, but I know if I was put in your position that I would want a lot more. Plus, they can do almost anything they want to do. I would have started off by asking for unlimited upgrades for 2 years and 2 roundtrip tickets. But then again, it depends on how much you fly on if they would even consider something like that (status upgrade, etc.). Again, it all depends on who you're talking to and their mood (as you can see by what your wife was given).
I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience. Just try to remember that that's the way the airline industry is. Each airline does things a bit differently, but in the end they're all a lot alike. And to the airlines, it's not our right to travel from one place to another on their plane even if we pay to do that - it's a favor to us if they get us there.

Michael
