As a former ATL resident, I can tell you that the chances of a second airport closer to town than Chattanooga or Macon are virtually nil. This is despite the fact that the ATL bought huge pieces of property for that purpose on two different occasions back in the 70's and early 80's. Suburban sprawl surrounded both locations before the City got around to building anything, despite the fact that the developers knew quite well what was planned. Local politics in Georgia are quite NIMBY focused.

AA does haul quite a few PAX between ATL and DFW/ORD. They even have gates in the coveted T concourse right next to the main terminal. In fact, AA used to tick DL off immensely by far offering cheaper fares (by half at times) ATL-HNL than DL, with a connection. Actually I got several flights for half of what people in DFW paid AA to get to HNL. Ah, the ecomomics of fare pricing. Gotta love it when it works to your advantage!

Back on topic, AAI is really not worth acquiring for AA any way you look at it.
