I done exactly as you have a number of times when flying through SIN to KUL. Since you can pay for a room at the Transit hotel in 6 hr blocks, it is perfect for the time you will be there (get a little sleep and a shower.) But as others have mentioned, if you can't get a room, SIN is definitely one of the best, if not THE best airport to get stuck in for 6 or so hours.
