Xeno, I often buy M fare ATL-NRT-TPE.... if the NRT-TPE leg is codeshare on CI, it shows as an M fare.
But the through M fare also allows me to fly UA, NW, JAL, CX instead on that last leg. However, on those other carriers, that last NRT-TPE leg will NOT show M -- it will be about their cheapest bucket.
So I suspect that this is your issue --- maybe the lowest bucket on the connecting airline that DL would pull from for your through M fare is not available. In theory, it is doable. I often force it on Expedia. Then I try Travelocity., Then Orbitz. It's funny how sometimes that connecting flight will show up only on one of the services.
