Not true. I grew up in Hawaii (1956-1982). Not a single "Big Hurricane" during that period and only Iniki since. That's 50+ years w/ only one big one. And even prior to Iniki, I can't recall my parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts etc reminiscing about a major hurricane there since the '20s when my family arrived there. A couple of barely Cat 1 blows, but even those are very few and far between.
