What boggles my mind is that they didn't start diverting flights to other airports. At least by diverting to DEN, SLC, SAN, SFO, PDX, SEA etc., pax could clear customs there, then they could pop them back on the flt and continue on to LAX if they were LAX-bound, or have others cnx out of the station where they cleared customs.
At least then there wouldn't be the backlog that there is now.
But I guess either the airline didn't communicate that to the pilots or the tower didn't communicate the problem and suggest diversion.
(Of course, they could have and the media just didn't report it.)
Always sounds good in theory Mr.Government but think about the business implications. It isn't cheap landing a fully loaded international aircraft and having it take off again.
I think in this case the US Gov't needs to get its act together and have a back up plan for when their systems come crashing down.
