I would usually choose the SQ or TG lounge depending on where I am, but I've been refused and redirected to ANA etc., depending on where I am ticketed.
For SYD, I was told that if I was flying AC (or any number of other *A partners), I would be entitled to lounge access in the ANZ lounge, but since I was flying UA and UA has their own lounge, I was expected/required to use that lounge.
Whoever told you this is mistaken. As a *G holder you are entitled to use whichever *G lounge you please, capacity permitting. There is no requirement to use the lounge of the carrier you're flying on.
