If you were accumulating miles in a OW FF scheme it is also worthwhile considering the OW Global explorer fare as the 34k product at least ex Australia is cheaper than the 29k circle pacific fare and you can do the PPT-SYD on the QF codeshare using the global explorer but of course will then have to go the long way home.
As you say you normally use the Alliance it may not be for you.
