My solution is to use my own quality headphones (I use noise-isolating ones from Shure), and I've added an in-line volume attenuator that I got from Radio Shack for $5 or $10. This way I can adjust the volume to make the loud announcements a little less eardrum bursting compared to the movie. It's still louder than it should be but I'm also able to quickly adjust the volume when an announcement starts, saving my eardrums.
