I agree with other posters that the following setups are better than what UA currently has at most stations:

The clusters of 6 or so chickens with an agent in the middle at AA at ORD.

The multi-airline machines that are set out away from the counters a bit like at LAS or YVR.

The best I've ever seen are at Air Canada at YYZ T1. The set up is perfect, and the interface is very user friendly, IMHO. Very spread out machines with an agent helping people as needed. Of course, there is MUCH more space there than in most checkin areas...
