At least a couple of years ago (the last time I used a PAYG type service) calls within the UK were still roughly 30-40 cents a minute (US).

When you count the cost of buying even as baseline phone (call it 20GBP, or $40 US), and what money you potentially "leave" on a PAYG card when you are done (i.e., those 3-5 GBP you didn't spend), call it 25GBP ($50 US)

That, for me roaming on Cingular, is about 70 minutes before breakeven. And calls back to the US are actually MORE expensive on PAYG (or were then) than Cingular's roaming rate...

Obviously, it depends on what you are doing and whom you are calling; but my experience has become that unless you are doing a lot of calling and racking up minutes, at best you are just chasing your tail.

I actually did - as per http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wire...ernational.asp its between $1-2 / minute depending on the destination. I think it'll be *close* But the one advantage /w the pay as you go - it will STOP working when we hit our budget limit
