IMHO if you are an adult and you are incapable of taking care of yourself you should stay off the plane....or be accompanied by someone to care for you..
Of course this is an issue I'll be facing in a few years so it remains to be seen if I will take my own advice...
I suppose you could make the case that the old gent should never have been traveling. However, the airline had instructions and seems to have dropped the ball on at least 3 or 4 occasions during his ordeal - and with disastrous consequences. I don't think BA should get off scott free on this one.
