I know I go against what most people would do, but I would split the record and upgrade your wife on the one XF seat now, and hope you clear first. If you don't clear, I think you could get someone to sit in F and move her back with you. You stand a much better chance at getting the upgrade in advance just looking for one more. The one that is there could go away at any time if someone else decides to book an award seat or if many people buy F or use NF, inventory control could remove the one XF seat at any time.

As for when you get to the airport, they should give you a departure management card with a high priority standby (FFCA? or something like that) since you "paid" for first. However, if there are no seats available, you won't clear. Could happen.

My experience is that when you get to the airport, even if you are traveling on the same PNR, if you have different status than your spouce, you will clear separately, and still may only get one FC seat. That's why I would give the lower priority person the one XF seat now, hoping that my 1K status would help later.

Just my 2 cents!
