We are more likely to line up a bus tour than to train into the city and walk around. Same with a car, very unlikely. We prefer the "certainity" of group travel with a guide where we do not speak the language.
All of these tours leave from the city - not the airport, therefore you will have to go to Rome - via Taxi, Leonardo Express (the train), etc... in order to join one.
