Sending unexperienced travelers to Thailand?

I'm not sure whether this should be here or in OMNI.

So, my wife’s little sister got married last week. She is starting a teaching job this year and couldn’t get away for a honeymoon at this point. I held her and her husband business awards from ATL to BKK for Christmas/New Year’s. My plan was for someone else to pitch in and get them to Phuket, where we booked a 5 night stay using SPG points. They would probably spend 2 nights in BKK and 2 in HKG either going or returning.

I wanted the whole thing to be a surprise, envisioning a series of envelopes to be opened as needed with instructions. My wife is concerned that her sister and brother-in-law will not be savvy enough travelers to get that far without dying. Apparently, when her sister got to SFO a couple of months ago to visit us, she called to ask “which way to walk.” I hate to sacrifice the surprise, and I’m afraid that giving their parents a chance to weigh in will lead to them being scared off. Neither has traveled out of the country before to the best of our knowledge. Am I being unrealistic? I've tried convincing my wife that Phuket is so given over to tourism it will be easier to navigate than Europe.
