If one truly desires to opt out great, but knowledge is power.

99% of the time one does not truly need junk mail.

BUT some instances that have helped me in the past which I would not have got had I opted out are:

#1. back when I did not pay off my CC's each month and carried balances, I used the pre-approved CC offers from other CC companies to lower my interest rate, basically "hi UA MP visa, my rate is at X and I've just received a tranfer offer for this better rate of Y, I like my MP Visa card but I need you to work with me on my interest rate" Bingo, my interest rate was lowered.

#2. when I've refinanced some properties, I've received phone and mail from companies that know I'm out shopping for a mortgage due to the activity on my credit report. I was more than pleased to use their offers to either better the offer of the lender I wanted to go with or I went with the "competitor" when my preferred lender wouldn't negotiate.

To each their own and if one truly believes they know every possible offer out there more power to you but personally I prefer to be "opted" in as I wouldn't have had the benefit of this competition. I shred my "junk" mail when I receive it, but sometimes those offers have knowledge that I expect will come in handy sometime in the future.
