I use the AAA rates all the time. Of course I am a member since AAA is a good deal for those of us who drive a lot. Plus it got me 20% savings on tickets to Graceland :-)

I like the AAA rates because they tend to be close to the "advance purchase rates" ... but have no advance purchase requirements. Unlike the sometimes more discounted "Entertainmant card" rates which sometimes are >30% and hence don't technically accrue benefits, they also offer full perks, privileges and PC points/RA room night credits.

But I must say I've never been asked for my card, although I have proffered it. I supposed it depends on the hotel. Similarly have never been asked for the card on a car rental, even though I use it (or corporate rate) a lot.
