I've seen it happen a couple times at ORD. They generally do it when the plane has completed its pushback and before they crank the engines. Also, it tends to only be possible with the smaller planes because you don't have to have a baggage loader vehicle to open the door and chuck in the bags. It takes about a minute or two. Definitely a ^ ^ moment!

I think that as long as the aircraft isn't blocking a taxiway, they can do that. The "alley" between B and C is safe, as are the west side gates on C for the most part. Some of the gates at the ends of B and C can block taxiways on pushback.
