The NY has been extended to international. If not available, UA 1K desk sends a message to IM in Chicago to open up if the flight is not oversold. Used this procedure for nonstatus members travelling to Australia even during heavily travel period; as long as the points are coming from my 1K account.
BTW, will not be surprise in 2008 UA extends the above NY for 1K to Business Class awards internationally.Unlike SE will not be limited to the member. It probably be similiar to the NY.
I find no booking,change or cancellation fees for 1K an invaluable benefit.
I have saved couple of thousand$.
Last Christmas booking, my son changed and rerouted his award ticket 6 times.
I just booked an award ticket from OZ for him for next week. We have changed it 2 times. Probably another change after the travel has begun.
BTW,IM opened a J-award for next week travel MEL-YYZ.
2007 Christmas booking already has 2 changes 4 months more to go.
2007 Instant KK changes to International J by AE
2008 will not be surprise NA goes the same way.
I must say I am very impress with the way AE continues enhances the SE benefits with changes to Instant KK and Fees.
