I finally opened the new Amenity kit this morning at home, after being on DL56 yesterday from NRT. I must concur that i'm underwhelmed by it all. I'll admit that in these lean days of restructuring, DL is looking to trim costs wherever it can - however this trimming shouldn't be visible to the customer - especially in the front cabin.
There are obviously differing views on what the kits are for - usable/disposable stuff for your trip, or a nice pouch of goodies to take home or use on other flights. I think many flyertalk folks are more in the latter, where they have taken one of the nice leather DL pouches and stock it with in-flight things like toiletries, headphones, and other sundries.
I doubt DL designs these for the latter reason, and treat them as a disposable kit for each flight - this might explain the move they are making to all the recycled stuff. They can, on the one hand, appear eco-friendly - whilst also cutting the costs of not including much stuff and ditching the nice carrying case.
Shame.
