With 2 weeks and the kids I'd probably split it too. I might consider 8 or 9 days on Maui and the rest on the Big Island with a focus on the volcano. My personal opinion/experience is that Maui has a greater number of activities and they're more accessible (time wise). With young kids the time spent just getting around on the Big Island might be a bit much. Cranky kids in the car for 3 hours can be a drag.
