Without a car the airport is quite far from everything.
And all of the "el cheapo" hotels will be on University Ave. which is in the middle of town. About 12 miles from the airport.
There are some cheaper hotels along Madison Blvd a couple of miles from the airport, including a Motel 6.

BTW I got a airfare watchdog alert, and it looks like the cheapo fare is available HSV-LAX as well (at least as of Friday, haven't looked today.) That's on NW, UA, and US. You can take NW through DTW for a bit more miles than the usual MEM connection.
