Locking checked-in bags when flying to the US

I usually lock my bags when travelling to the US with AF and I've never had a problem with that. However, I was recently talking to a friend that argued it was non sense to do so and that my bags should be unlocked. What's you guys position on this?

How likely am I to have something stolen from my bags if I don't lock them?

How likely am I to have my bags ripped open if I lock them?

And how likely am I to loose my bags connecting in LHR?
