These are usually the same corporate accounts that get a variable number of Platinum Elite cards that they can pass around to valued employees at their discretion regardless of actual miles flown.

I believe, but cannot prove, that op-up chances are improved when someone has both personal elite status from FD/FB and corporate status.
I can comment on that.

In my company you get a gold card when you fly regularely for your business. The company is actually paying AF for that gold card. I have to fly just as much as anyone else for my plat card. And I haven't received an op-up in (I actually lost count a while ago) over 70 economy flights or so...
