Paying pax know that op ups ONLY should happen if M is oversold. Random upgrades every once in a while is a great idea, but this is not the way to do it.

I agree, all my op-ups have been done either at the gate or at check-in. If I fly from the ORD there is usually a long queue of people on standby so I make sure to "volunteer to move seats" to allow the poor souls a seat.
