NW is the no. 2 airline at MKE. It is working on a code-share with YX. There is little route overlap. NW could, if it wanted, operate YX as a virtual free-standing subsidiary, i.e., keeping the cookies and corporate culture, etc.
My first thought was "what about NW's unions" but then I remembered they've taken their unions to the cleaners already so that wouldn't be a problem.
My guess is they are still trying to drive up Air Tran's price. No one else wants 717s. No one wants MD80s. Yeah maybe AA would buy them to eliminate capacity like they did with Reno and Air Cal, and ended up doing with TWA.
