Not entirely true, though it may have a change fee associated with it. CO definitely won't give it to you, but the others are hit-or-miss on that front.
As for starting with high prices and reducing them later, CO does this on some routes as well, and they're making money, too, so maybe that's the new future of airline revenue management. Who knows?
