SAA fly direct from the US to JNB (possibly with a re-fuelling stop only).
You can travel on SAA using your United Miles as they are part of Star Alliance - just call up United Mileage Plus and see if they have availabilty for when you want to fly.
SAA fly from Washington and New York to JNB
Also Delta fly from Atlanta to JNB - but you couldn't use United miles with them. I think that is all the options from the US.
Otherwise you will have to fly via Europe - options if you are interested in *A only would be Lufthansa from Frankfurt or Swiss from Zurich - also SAA from London or Frankfurt.
If transferring via Europe, then most major European carriers also fly to JNB (ie BA, Virgin, KLM, Air France)
