2) How long are your connections in ORD and LHR? Personally I would risk it if they are long enough (more than 2-2.5 hours), but spread your things between your bags (i.e. don't put all of your stuff in one and all your wife's in another, etc), and keep some important things in your hand baggage. That way if one bag goes astray, it's inconvenient rather than disastrous.
Layovers in both ORD and LHR are approx 4 hrs....hope the baggage crews that transfer the bags in that much time. and to top it of we arrive/depart from T4
