1) I don't know what the in-seat power socket is called but you need a special adaptor to be able to plug in laptops and portable DVDs. They sell them on board (something like US$150 though). But in F, AFAIR they have one or two that they can lend you. Ask the CSD when you board.

2) How long are your connections in ORD and LHR? Personally I would risk it if they are long enough (more than 2-2.5 hours), but spread your things between your bags (i.e. don't put all of your stuff in one and all your wife's in another, etc), and keep some important things in your hand baggage. That way if one bag goes astray, it's inconvenient rather than disastrous.
