I was able to standby for a flight last week which was already in the final zone of boarding... I did not bug the gate agent who was staffing the flight, but instead talked to the gate agent working the neighboring gate. He was very friendly, walked over to ask the other agent if it "was ok", and then handed me a new boarding pass. He was quite efficient, there were a few stragglers after me to board the flight. :-)
