EXP question: Ever reroute a day earlier and not get charged?

I've had a mixup with my ticket--discovered this mid-trip. I could conceivably leave my hotel today and head to the airport to give it a shot, since I'm not confirmed to leave until tomorrow night (gah). Or, I can hold onto my hotel room and not give it a go.

The EXP desk would charge me some $300 for the changed ticket--too much to make it worthwhile. Supposedly, all flights are oversold (what I was told on Friday night), but that person found flights she could put me on...didn't ask if they were oversold too. Just that now I know, if up the ante, I could do it.

The fare difference is what's killing me--wouldn't think twice about paying the $100 change fee, since that's the same as the extra night hotel.

So, this is my long way of asking: Have any EXP's had the change fee charged at airport, but not the fare difference? I'm trying to weight whether I should try to go down or not...

Thanks!
