I've noticed, perhaps more on the newer planes, that there is sometimes a horizontal "slot" cut out of the solid partitions between sections. (I.e. economy/business)

It's a narrow slot, opened during takeoff and landing, closed in the air (I think?), and I wonder what exactly it's for?

Could it be a desperate attempt to make the cabin look larger?? Or some safety device? Has anyone else noticed this thing?
