Having been involved in several company mergers outside of the airline industry, all I can say is the success or failure of a merger has as much to do with how compatible the cultures and management approaches are, as it does with how much logical business sense the merger makes. I'm not so sure (and others may have more insight) if AA and AS have cultural compatability. I'd think CO and AS were a better fit, or Delta and AS, that way.
