The requirements usually include follow instructions given by the crew, so you would guess speaking whatever language the crew speaks would be a good idea.
I figure when I'm in an exit row, I need two skills.
1) Open the door
2) Turn and say "Follow Me"
I know that several airlines state you have to be able to speak and understand English (well, I wasn't sure, but just looked
)
I'd suggest a third skill: being able to understand the FA when he/she say's "don't open that door if you see fire outside the window" or "don't open that door - there's a small gremlin on the wing."
