What if I stay there once a year?I'm thinking about keeping most of the starpoints in SPG and transfering them only when necessary.

you don't even have to stay to earn points. I often have lunch at the Atlantis Sheraton in Zürich and show my Starwood card to get the points credited. My Starwood points have no expiry date.
