I've tried this twice in the past 6 months, and both times I was told by a CSR that they could not enter in my MP#.
It's interesting reading through these posts - looks like the experience is inconsistent across the board. When I fly US, I now use OLCI, go through security, then have the GA reprint my boarding passes at the gate.
When I first started traveling, USAir was my carrier of choice (for the most stupid reason of all - they were my first flight). Booking award travel with DM was so difficult for me that I switched to UA as my primary career two years ago. I've been much happier with UA.
