Thumbs up Spontaneous inflight upgrades

G’d evening folks!

Just did my by now usual LHR-ARN run and had another very nice experience with SAS.
They have really impressed me lately with many nice improvements like the great new fast-track at ARN, free wi-fi in the lounges and a very well-managed overnight stay in CPH due to a missed connection.

Anyway, this time I did LHR-ARN on the late SK 1524 sitting on the first row of P-class. P-class was fairly full (80-90%), Eco extra had three rows with only one pax, and business had a handful of passengers.
As usual at LHR there was a long line of aircrafts waiting to take-off and during the wait the purser came around the cabin. He first approached the man in Eco extra, and since I was sitting just two rows behind I heard the man was invited to move up to business class.
Next he came to P-class, in his hand he had the passenger manifest with the status passengers onboard. As I was sitting on the first row he stopped at my row and asked me if I was jacob_m. After confirming I was he told me he had a few extra economy meals onboard and asked me if I was interested in moving after take-off to enjoy a cold meal in economy extra. I certainly didn’t have to think twice about that!!

After take-off when the seatbelt sign had been turned off four passengers in different parts of the P-class cabin unfastened their seatbelts, collected their belongings and moved to the empty economy extra cabin, to the very dismay of the other passengers who just couldn’t understand what was going on and why these four people had been selected.

I wasn’t sure whether that ”extra economy meal” included free drinks as well, but it certainly did, I was asked a mere six times during the flight if I wanted anything more to drink.
I enjoyed a very tasty tandoori chicken and couscous with both wine and whiskey, we were even offered drinks during the descent!! ^

I have to say this was a fantastic initiative of SAS, just upgrading people without really having a reason for it, except that they had an empty economy extra cabin and a few extra meals they had to throw away anyway. And of course specifically targeting status passengers, since I was addressed by name from the passenger manifest there was no coincidence I was selected, I think all of us were EBGs.

The purser (who strangely happened to be Norwegian) was also the best I have encountered on SAS in years. He knew very well who he had upgraded and really made a fantastic effort to provide the best possible attentive service, keep us happy and make the op-up into something very positive. I have never been offered drinks so many times on an intra-Europe flight, in any class.
Interestingly he also spoke flawless English, his command of English was really exemplary, and when parked at ARN he made the following announcement: ”cabin crew, great job this evening all of you, disarm slides and crosscheck please”.

Didn’t they mention something earlier about “spontaneous upgrades” for EBGs? I recall having read it, perhaps a policy change has been made?!
Anyway, this was just fantastic experience, SAS should be proud to have a purser like Tore. ^^^
