Would I be right in thinking it likely that the promotion from Silver to a first time Gold will happen whilst we are away and before the return flight?

If I have Internet access whilst out there and I see that the promotion has taken place, do I need to re-add the BAEC numbers into the booking to make the system see the Gold promotion, or will the system already know that and when checking in for the return flight, the BP would be showing us a Gold Card holders and, in turn, update the total miles earning showing in MMB?

Of course, we may or may not get into the FIRST lounge as we will have been promoted to Gold, the BP will hopefully show that, but we'll still have the Silver cards. Not that it matters too much Can't get a fax from BAEC as we will be away in the US.

I assume we would get the extra miles for having Gold over Silver on the return flight if the promotion has been done?

Cheers
Yes;

No you don't need to re-add the numbers and it will recognise you as Gold;

You should be OK on the strength of the BPs although at some lounges (notably LHR) they check your card to "check the expiry date" (if so, I'm surprised they can't check your status online).
