It's pretty clear on their web site. The non-NT maps are for older products like my Streetpilot 2610. If you have a Nuvi or anything other than one of their ancient 'on the road' products, you need the "NT" maps.
What's hard to find on their web site is the upgrade prices for the maps. I just ordered the N. America v8 upgrade, and I have an old email from the stating the v8 upgrade price is $75, which is a lot less than what I paid for my first map upgrade. (The Streetpilot 2610 is pretty damn old, but still not worth replacing for my usage patterns.)
