Mine fits in my travel wallet -- but as a rule, my passport only comes with me when I travel. I do have a colour scan uploaded to 2 email accounts ~ so in a pinch I could present that.

I do carry my birth certificate and DL in the same wallet as my ATM and CC's ~ so would be pretty safe for a road trip. Airports have become a sport of a different sort lately.
