From what I understand United's 744's rotate throughout the entire network. So instead of having a 744 fly SYD-SFO-SYD over and over again, it could fly SYD-SFO-HKG-ORD-NRT-SFO-FRA-etc...(this is example only, I can't remember where the 744's fly anymore). Hence, the average age of the 744's flying SFO/LAX-SYD/MEL is the same as the average age of the entire 744 fleet.
