Re: Parking...yeah, so I'm reading. Guess we'll just put up with it...we'll probably be there for 2-3 nights on our way to Yosemite. Is there anywhere reasonably close to the SF CBD (say 20min drive) you can stay with cheaper or free parking?

If you're truely interested, check out biddingfortravel.com. The site can give you an idea of what rooms in specifica areas are going for and what hotels participate at what star rating categories. But yes, you are bidding blind based on stars and location. It was routinely getting the LAX Hilton for under $50 made me a believer. Sometimes however, there are no takers but you're no worse off.
I would pay the price and stay in SF. It's a beautiful city and you'll want to walk around at night.
