I've done something similar a few times with SAA - booking was DUR-JNB-LHR and I've discarded the DUR-JNB bit. I've always phoned the airline up directly and asked them to just drop the first bit (usually a day or two before I fly) - but just to make doubley sure I always made sure I checked in at JHB before the end of check in for the DUR flight - that way a no show could not flag. Don't know what the OPs connection time in LAX would be - but if possible you could try something similar. Of course there is no guarantee the same approach will work in your case.
