I read with interest the article about the “Professionalism of THAI cockpit crew” that was in Saturdays Bangkok Post.

I was on that flight from Phuket to Bangkok.

Your article is completely correct EXCEPT for the detail about the passengers. The yelling and screaming was deafening. The plane jerked to the left and tilted its left wing down as the wheel sunk into the grass, passengers grabbed for the seat in front of them to steady their movement. The noise of grass and mud hitting under the plane was clearly.

I immediately thought of the 1999 Qantas incident at the old Bangkok airport which left that plane stuck in the grass.

Once at the terminal and allowed to undo our seat belts we were able to clearly see mud and grass on top of the left engine and also between the wing and the flaps for much of the length of the left wing flaps. A number of passengers took photos through the windows, I took one photo of mud on top of the engine. I have attached the photo even though it is not a clear shot.

I must say that I was most impressed with the way the pilot managed to power the left engine to correct the tilt and then use the long runway to steady the plane and come to a safe stop. Without the pilot there may well have been a major incident.

I was disappointed that there was no apology over the planes PA. A crew member said something over the PA in Thai but those, including myself, who do not speak Thai were unable to share the announcement.
