First, it's 15K each way, so it would take 30K to upgrade your whole itinerary.
There is no fee to use your miles to upgrade on UA. However, availability may be limited, because United offers "Confirmed Regional" upgrades to its 1K and higher members, which have priority. There are additional subtleties involved beyond this, but you can read about that in the UA forum. For a popular route like HNL, mileage upgrades can be a bit tough to get. However, it certainly doesn't hurt to try.
For international routes, only higher fare classes on UA will qualify for upgrades. For domestic, pretty much any fare will qualify.
