This is certainly unacceptable behavior towards you regardless of your FF status. I would write United a letter, and ask for some kind of reasonable compensation perhaps a confirmed INTERNATIONAL upgrade cert. I've never gotten one, but Rudi apparently has been able ot wrangle one with chocolate. I usually get upgraded in Paris because they know my face, and I am friendly if nothing else.
