The strange reason for the "unknown" status: I tried to use an AA.com gift card I received last Christmas. But it appears that the store clerk who sold the card never activated it, so the itinerary couldn't be ticketed. So now that I've already thrown away the gift card and can't take it back to the store to complain, I'm out that $50.
